A tour of the monarch butterflies is a unique experience! Every year, millions of bright orange butterflies from North America fly into the pine forests of Mexico to hibernate here.
You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning and set out for the pine forests near Mexico City. Once there, you will be greeted by countless monarch butterflies as soon as you enter the nature reserve. You can decide on the spot whether you want to hike on foot or horseback through the pine forest up to the summit. The closer you get to the peak, the more clearly you can hear the beautiful sound of the butterflies flapping their wings. When it is cold, they gather in the crowns of the pine trees, but as soon as the sun comes out, they begin to dance and fly around in the air. You will witness this extraordinary, natural spectacle, and you will be right in the middle of it.
After your descent and an eventful day, you will be brought back to your hotel.
Yes! For the children it is an unforgettable experience to be surrounded by so many butterflies and to hike through a veritable fairytale forest.
You hike on unpaved paths through the forest. The mountain summit is almost 2,800 meters high and in some places it goes steeply upwards. The tour can still be undertaken without any hiking or mountaineering experience. However, you should have a basic level of fitness.
The monarch butterflies hibernate in Mexico and arrive in Mexico during November. That is the moment when the national parks open. We recommend taking this tour between December and February, because that is when the number of butterflies is highest and the experience is the most beautiful.
Sometimes you can’t really imagine it, but it can also get cold in Mexico in winter, especially in the mountain and forest regions. We therefore recommend packing warm things that you can take off gradually as soon as the sun comes out. Since the tour leads through the forest on sometimes unpaved roads, we recommend well-fitting hiking shoes.
